EFFECT OF THE PERIDEX FILTER ON PERITONITIS RATES IN A CAPD POPULATION

Stephen R. Ash, Richard Horswell, Jr, Emilie M. Heeter and R. Bloch

Hemodialysis Laboratory, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907, Arnett Clinic and St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, IN

A unidirectional filter for CAPD fluid was tested in a population of CAPD patients at one center, to determine its effectiveness in reducing peritonitis. Incidence ofperitonitis was compared in four groups of patients:

  1. High-risk patients who chose to use the filter.
  2. Same patients, before filter use.
  3. Overall population of the center before March, 1981 (introduction of filter for high-risk patients).
  4. Overall population after filter introduction.
